I'm an engineer at a PBS/NPR affiliate and while this may seem a bit out there, if you're familiar with the NPR show "Car Talk", at their website,

they have a "need a mechanic" link where they only list shops given high ratings by their listeners. Check it out and you might find something in your area.
Other than that, looking for an independent Volvo shop familiar with the FWD cars would likely save you big over a dealer's service department.
It's a big job made more complex in a front wheel drive powertrain. The transmission is separated from the engine and the crankshaft's rear oil seal replaced. It's a cheap part but the labor isn't.
