Regular Unleaded in the S80 S80 2001

Is it really necessary to use Premium unleaded gas in an S80 2.9. I bought my 2001 about 5 weeks ago and I've been using regular with an Octane rating of 87. I've driven about 2k and haven't noticed any knocks or pings. I'm I hurting the long-term performance? What if I alternated? Super unleads runs about $.20 a gallon more here (Northern VA).
