OBD II for 850 850 1996

Bruce--I just went through the same process you are going through, looking for the best OBD-2 scanner, from handheld to the PC laptop. Most people on the forum recommend Alex Peper's software which was written for a PC. One of the problems with the Equus, Actron, and other low-end handhelds, is that many of them only access the engine codes. Well, if the only thing that ever went wrong with your Volvo was the engine train you wouldn't have to worry. Unfortunately, there is the whole ABS system, airbags, etc., to worry about. As I recall, the Equus and the Actron won't pull any of these critical codes. And, the ABS module is notorious for failing, along with the rear wheel sensors. Your handhelds aren't going to be much help when the ABS light comes on. Initially I was a little reluctant to have an old PC in my shop or sitting on my lap, but after reviewing all the different handhelds out there and discovering their shortcomings, I will opt for Peper's software. None of the handhelds, by the way, will turn out your service light. Peper's software will. There's a lot more you can do with his software with a large screen and storage than you can with the handhelds. Just depends on how much you want to get into your car. If you haven't already, go to the following site for a review of all the OBD-2 scanners out there. Phone them up and ask what other codes they will retrieve besides engine train. Dick
