My '94 850 gave me the exact problem several months ago, at 154,000 miles. After an induction cleaning to get rid of the combustion chamber deposits, and running a can BG44k in a full tank of gasoline, the car started to drive smoother. Now the mileage is back up to 28.5 miles on the highway and about 22 miles in the city.
My brother's 240 had a similar problem. He put a 16 oz STP Complete Fuel System Cleaner (available at many chain stores)into a full tank of gas and the mileage went back up to its previous level.
Changing the fuel filter also helps. I went ahead to have the EGR serviced and replaced the PCV with the flame trap. It's just routine maintenace, but the replacement of spark plugs, air fiter and such do not normally cure the problem.
