Unfortunately not unusual

The most likely cause is that whoever took the car out probably failed to look at its fuel level guage on "E" with its low fuel light on. In my 24 yrs of new car dealer experience, I've seen people do that on several occasions. Even new cars need that magical liquid.....GAS :)
