I'm fairly sure the screen is there as a "last resort" type of filter. Essentially to prevent any larger pars of debris from getting sucked into the engine. The stock filter setup alows mice and or junk to get into the box however with a pod type filter (which i plan on putting in this spring) it eliminates the possibility of this large debris and the screen can be removed (see eastern areospace site).
