Brain dead? Probably not.

All the bulbs except the instrument bulbs illuminate in the DRL mode. To get the instruments to light you have to set the switch to the "headlight" position.

I just leave mine in the "headlight" position all the time. I keep the panel illumination setting at 50% and haven't had a bulb go out in 65K miles.
