So then why did they design it in the first place?

Obviously there was a reason why the 850 SHOULD have a flame trap!

Now, if someone could point to a service bulletin from Volvo that states that the flame trap is no longer necessary, then I would agree with you. But no such service bulletin exists, to my knowledge.
