info strip below clocks 850 1994

Gentlemen, I havea small problem with a completely blank information 'strip' you know, the one that tells you mpg, time, temp etc. I had a small amount of welding done to the right hand door check strap bit where it enters the body. The batery was disconnected. The car runs fine - just no info. Does anyone have any ideas how to repair or replace?!
Greatful thanks! (my wife likes it and is giving me a considerable amount of flack!)
