Radio lighting system V70-XC70 1998

I replaced lights on my SC-816 unit and it is easy to do.

1) Push on the vertical handles so that they release and stick out and pull the radio about halfway out.

2) Remove the Philips screws on the side. Only 3 needed to be removed; the ones on the large plastic tabs on either side and the one above the right side large plastic tab (it holds a small, thin, metallic tab).

3) Remove the volume button by pulling on it. The bass, treble ands fader buttons don't even have to be removed.

4) Gently pull the face off by working the 8 or so plastic tabs out (top, left, right and bottom).

5) The green board is right there and it does not even have to be removed. You can however get the whole face out by unplugging that large flat connector (the flat white cable). The lights are housed in these round black things visible on the green board.

Note: when you're done with bulb replacement, you can also do light tests with the front cover in this position, it does not need to be re-installed on the radio housing (saves pulling the plastic tabs out over and over).

6) Remove the appropriate light bulb housing (i think there are 6 round black thing on the board, pick the one that matches the area where the bulb is burnt) by unscrewing them 1/4 turn, in the ccw direction.

7) Remove the bulbs from the housing by breaking the tiny wires free from their "sealed position" by removing part of the epoxy that holds them in place.

8) IMPORTANT: i talked to a radio repair shop guy and he told me to use 8 volt bulbs on these Alpine-made radios. I found 8 volts, 35 mA bulbs at a local electronics supply store and they were perfect, both in size and brightness. I also checked the voltage on OEM bulbs (with the dimmer at max brightness) and it was 8V indeed. Radio-Shack 12V bulbs will be too dim as someone said in another Volvo message board. I also found 6V bulbs but these would probably have been too bright (did not try them).

9)Re-install the blue rubber sleeve on the new bulb, rewind the wires so that they make proper contact when the bulb housings are re-installed on the board and that's it.

10) Re-assemble in reverse order.

Again, 8V, 35mA micro-bulbs are what you need. Their brightness is identical to that of OEM bulbs. Finding OEM bulbs (complete with housing and colored rubber sleeve) from a scapped radio makes this even simpler...

And those Volvo dealership guys that told me i had to replace the whole radio unit... oh well.
