So I'm looking for a replacement Volvo... 850 1995

Some family friends recently acquired a '95 854GLT w/112K miles. Normally I wouldn't be too interested since it's not a wagon, but it's a 5 speed, which I sorely miss since leaving my '82 240 for an '84 240 with a slushbox.

It's black with tan leather, and has all sorts of options like the six disk changer, traction control, heated everything, and even the little wipers and pissers for the headlights. All for $4800 to me.

I had been looking mostly at early '90s 940 and 740 wagons, as I want something more modern than a 240, but I know I can trust the B230 motor.

My question is (finally): Should I dive into FWD Volvo ownership, or will this car own me? I read the post in the 700/900 FAQ, and have seen a little from the recent posts. It seems they have some common problems, but then again, all cars have problems. Is the manual transmission (designated M90, no?) particularly reliable or unreliable? Is there a good way to check the rear main seal?

The big things I see that I need to check on this car are:

1. AC evaporator
2. timing belt replacement interval
3. the flame trap
4. ABS controller (can this be tested by simply getting the ABS to engage)

Any other big things to look out for?

I thank you for reading to the end and thank you in advance for your reply.

Will R.
