Freon Level 850

I feel kinda dumb for that one. I forgot that I had turned on the ac switch earlier and started freaking out at the noise. What would be the beginning of the procedure to raise the freon levels? My ac doesn't really work (probably why I forgot I had turned it on) could this be why?
