If I remember, you were miost in need of third rosw seating, and if so, youwill find that teh 940 has quite a bit more room way back. The 850/70 is considerably more compact, although the cubic measurements for passenger space are very close or even larger than the 940. The lost space is all from that third row seat area, making it pretty marginal, in my mind. Otherwise, the 940 is teh classic "brick"; fairly crude, slow (except trubo), fuel inefficient, very comfortable, modest handling, extremely serviceable, and with most parts that are understressed and stong - ie: last long time. The 850 is much more complex, tighter servicing space (ie: higher labor costs), some parts seem to be less robust in long haul although many of these are racking up pretty high mileage with good care. Overall, a car that will probably be more expensive in long term, but offset that with much better handling, better overall efficiency, just as good comfort and open road manners - more of a driver's pleasure car, particularly the turbo.
Luck,
Mike
