steering wheel covers/remote starters 850 1997

Both remotes for my 97 GLT wagon have quit, despite new batteries and numerous attempts to reprogram. Are they repairable? A computer friend of mine said it wasn't the circuit board but rather mechanical, the underside of the switch. Does the person who repairs the ABS modules (can't remember his name) also work on these remotes? Dick
