Since you are familiar with the FWD volvos and its white 20v engine, then you're decision to get a V70 should be easy.
Go for the GLT model(light pressure turbo), lots of power for little money compared to the T5(high pressure turbo).
Everything problemwise that applies to the S70 applies to the wagon plus the tailgate rattles and squeaky rear seats, but these are minor and are solved easy and cheap.
The '99 and newer 70 series scare me with the ON THE FLY electronic throttle sensor, whic usually fails when you're cruising on the highway and expensive to repair, about $1000. Do a search on ETS and you'll see.
There are plenty of clean, one owner, low miles '98 V70 GLT's out there for the picking, I know I bought one. Be patient, ask for maintenance records and you should be OK.
Good luck
