Typically you replace the drier when one of two things has happened, either the system is wide open and exposed to atmosphere(thus saturating the desicant in the drier) or the compressor has grenaded and scattered bits of metal throughout the system. If you fall into neither of these catagories then you may want to consider foregoing the drier replacement.
