It should not have stalled (the alternator does power the car
and charges the battery once the car is started). Still, I
would replace the battery first. The OEM batteries typically last
about 3 years. When they fail, they do fail rather dramatically.
An original in a 98 puts you at the 6 sigma mark and qualifies you
for the longest known OEM battery life bumper sticker.
Interstate makes good batteries. Costco brand is made by the same
manufacturer in case there is a Costco near by. A new battery will
run about $75-$100. It is easy to install and most auto/tire store
places will swap in the new one in for a nominal (or no) fee.
Once the new battery is in the voltage to the battery should be checked
with the engine running. Another easy test for the garage to perform.
