I do not know if your transmission has a "lock-up" feature, but your tale sounds like the lock-up is not switching off.

You are lucky that the car stalls, when the lock-up switch fails in some fire apparatus, you cannot stop the vehicle.

Pop it into neutral if you are in a bad situation.

Have you checked for codes?
