Ok, just went out this morning and and of course the car is working fine. After starting it a few times and getting it warm I noticed the overflow res had a small crack where the small line hooks to it. Pressure and antifreeze where coming out. Could this have contributed to the problem? I assume a cooling system which is losing pressure will not cool properly. I did not notice the car running unusually hot but I didn't look at the guage yesterday either. I did watch it this morning and when the engine was cold, it showed that on the dial and as it warmed up, it showed that too. I assume by this the temp sens is working properly and not my problem. I did notice when the car would not start, the relay I replaced was really hot. But it was also really hot last time I replaced it and fixed the problem. They put this relay in a place that gets no air at all and is sitting right on top of the radiator. I did not like this so I took a spade type 1 1/4" drill bit and drilled a hole in the plastic wall at the relay so some air could get to it from the grill. Don't know if this will help but thought it worth a try. I also checked out the chassis to engine grounds. Both where on top at rear of motor and easily accessed. The connections on the motor side where highly suspect. I cleaned and reset both. Don't know if this will fix it but who knows? I used JB weld to seal the hole in the overflow res. Waiting for that to cure now.
With the key on, I plugged and unplugged the relay I replaced and could hear something like a electric motor turning on and off somewhere from under the distributor area. I thought the fuel pump was at the tank so I'm not sure what this could be but the relay seems to be doing what it's supposed to do. After a few times I could also here what sounded like gas spraying from the injectors. I really thinks it's a flooding/heat related problem. I hope I am describing these symtoms well enough for someone to interject.
I also checked the oil cap for the high rev problem. There was oil on the valve cover as if it had been leaking. I cleaned it up and greased it and stuck it back on. The gasket does need replacing. I'll do that but don't have one right now. The air cleaner looked OK. I did not see the flapper someone referred to in another post. The filter seemed to be seated properly. The high rev prob is still there but we're used to it. Maybe the gasket on the oil cap will help.
I don't know about the cam/crank sensor. I don't know how to check it or even where it is. I could use some more input on that if anybody has some suggestions.
I hate to send my wife off in it again, seems she gets more aggravated each time it leaves her stranded. If I don't fix it soon I might have other problems to discuss in another forum!!
