This comes up every now and then. See this thread for more including
Volvos driving procedure to reset it (which has been reported to sometimes
work and sometimes not work):
http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/index.htm?id=555956
What happens is after an ECU is reset (Check Engine light cleared)
there are some "state" settings that the computer can not initially
determine. Example might be that some emission system is working
which can't be verified until the car has been used for some time.
In other words, it does not reset to "clear" it resets to "I don't
know but give me some time to figure it out." You won't pass
emissions until the "I don't knows" change to "fail" or "pass" state.
Driving a few hunred miles would probably be enough. The driving
procedure Volvo documents trys to reduce that by going through
specific actions. Above thread has a lot more on this.
