With almost 300K miles, I assume you are using synthetic 5w30. Verify the tappet noise by unscrewing the oil filler cap at idle, carefully. Is the cam getting lots of oil? If not, it may be time to get a top end overhaul. Hydraulic lifters use oil pressure to keep the valve clearance constant, if one of these lifters has retired, it needs to be fixed very soon to prevent further damage.
