hi,
carefully remove the pen holder by prying out at each end with 2 trim tools, then you should see 2 torx 25 screws underneath that secure the bottom of the unit you desribe (which by the way is the climate control unit) this is tricky to remove and you will probably break something doing this anyway but basically you pull the bottom out slightly then pull the whole unit towards the rear of the car. good luck.
