Good news. I got the fan out; cleaned off the dead bugs, leaves, pine needles, and I-don't-know-what-else; cleaned it up with some WD-40; and it works!

I almost wrecked it. There's a piece of the housing that needs to come off to allow the contacts to disengage; you've got to remove it before you pull the fan out of the housing.

I'm heading for the dealer Monday to buy the pollen filter retrofit kit.
