This is part of the thread that scared me into fixing it..... V70-XC70 1998

So, I take it that it's not your story then?
I can only see that experience happening if the shoes were mechanically stuck, like the cable was not releasing or rusted e-brake shoe pivots causing the e-brakes to be stuck on. That's why most people with old "beaters" and with auto trans (no real need for an e-brake) simply cut the cables. Been there, done that.
If just an e-brake shoe fell off its backing plate, it'd just break up into little peices w/o causing a problem.
