I work at one SO someone's lacking knowledge where you're at.
Volvo has their very own synthetic ATF and a TSB on the subject of flushing AWD ATs with their synthetic ATF whenever a particular shift related problem occurs. It's also recommended for towing too.
It doesn't come cheap, it's $15 per liter and Volvos TSB says to use 16 pints when flushing the trans from regular ATF.

It's Service bulliten #43-0029 for '98-'00 AWD and AW 50-42 trannies. The fluids called JWS 3309 fluid, PN is 1161640 for a 4 liter bottle (X4) or 1161540 for the 1 liter bottles (X16).
