My old VW bug used to do that. It also ran on 3 cylinders until it warmed up. Found out the distributer cap had a crack - changed it and the rotor to solve the problem. You might want to check all of the plug wires for tightness, coil wires too. A silicone spray will displace water and may help inside the distributer cap, wipe it clean with a lint free cloth.
