The leak has been going on for quite awhile now. The car is used by my wife, and I rarely drive or ride in it, and don't pay a lot of attention to it.
I noticed oil on the ground where she parks it one day and asked her if she had added any oil lately. She said yes, so I started looking further. The next day I took her car on a long trip. During that trip I noticed a film on my rear window that smeared when I attempted to clean it with the wiper. It turned out to be a film of oil. I had to add two quarts that afternoon. That evening I took the car into a garage and put it on a lift. They thoroughly cleaned the area between the turbo and engine, checked the lines and ran the car for a period of time. There was more oil coming from that location, but it wasn't the oil lines. So I have made the assumption that it is the RMS.
A short while after that event, my wife took the car to "Vinny, the Volvo tech". He said, "oh, it's just the valve cover seal". He fixed it for $50. One day later the rear window was again coated with oil. I thought, maybe it's just residual oil. No. Weeks later the problem persists. I have inspected the easily seen areas and nothing is obvious. My problem is definitely the lower or rear areas of the engine.
I have access to a lift where I work, so before I pull the engine, I'll clean it up again and inspect the underside one more time.
I'm planning for the worst, but obviously hoping...
In the mean time, any advice on service manuals, special tools or tricks for an engine R&R?
Thanks. Charles H.
