Get another opinion from an experienced Volvo dealer master or expert tech. I'd guess that your noise is something else.

Did they use a chassis ears to diagnose the noise?

I've replaced a few rear diffs for a whining noise, ring and pinion wear (NOT the TNN counterweight either).
