Simple but an often overlooked cause. Make sure your tire pressure is OK. Easy to check and free. As mentioned, a failing O2 sensor is a good bet also. My mpg dropped to about 12 mpg when it failed. Look for soot on the area in and around the tail pipe or a puff of black smoke when you goose it.
