As mentioned, it is one of the primary sensors that sets your fuel mixture. It can't be bypassed and as it fails completely, your gas mileage will drop into the pits. What's the price of gas in TX? When the sensor on my 96 went south, mileage dropped to 12 mpg and at $1.80/gal, that was a real incentive to replace the sensor to get it back to its normal 24 mpg.. ALso, running them very long with a dead sensor will destroy your cat. No big deal I guess if you live when there are no emission standards.
