Rear view mirror replacement 850

I have a 1995 850. I want to replace the existing rear view mirror with a Gentex auto dimming/compass unit. These attach directly to the window. Right now the mirror attaches to a "bracket" that comes from a place above the windshield. Can I remove that "bracket"??? I would want, for safety sake, to not have that there anymore. How do I remove the mirror arm?
