Checking the voltage would eliminate the guess. I can't buy the bad diode board either, a bearing in the alternator - yes; worn brushes - yes; worn tensioner - yes.
Have someone start the car when it is cold and listen to the tensioner. If it is talking, replace it. If the belt is slipping, replace to too.
The alt light coming on could be from slippage.
