If you have not already done so, check the gas cap to make sure it is on well. Second, pick up a scan/reset tool (you can get an equus 3100 for less than $100 on ebay, and I've seen them other places for $100-140). This unit will read codes, but you will have to translate them to determine what it means for your 1999 year vehichle. go to www.volvospeed.com and check out the forums there. Rich, the tech on the site, has a translation list for 99 and newer vehichles that he will send to you.
Common on these cars getting to be 5-6 years old
1. O2 sensors, especially if car is at 100k miles
2. secondary air injection system
3. Electronic throttle module (I'm sure you've heard of this)
The MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) is not necessarily a sign of major trouble. Most times, the car is just trying to tell you it needs a little tweaking, or something is getting old and needs replacing.
