Check your contacts- Volvos are notorious for establishing poor contacts that require cleaning. I have also found that the tailight that is part of the trunk lid will get loose connections because of the trunk lid opening/closing. Once, on a road trip when I was tired of the light I pulled over and rubbed the contact of the bulb on the asphalt to rough it up. No problem after that.
