While driving my mom's S40 today, I discovered that a metal-on-metal noise is much worse than I had originally thought. I noticed it when I leaned up against the S40 while it was parked and it rolled back a bit, producing a sharp metal scraping sound from the right rear wheel.
Driving the car today, it seems that the noises now come from both rear wheels and continue even at speed. I was driving around my neighborhood at about 20 mph with the windows down, and I could definitely hear a metallic noise almost like a sprinkler or running faucet, but that was coming from the rear wheels.
I would guess the problem has to do with the brakes/rotors, and probably is because something is not retracting properly when the brake pedal is released. Does anyone have any guesses as to what is causing the noise, and is this a problem that needs to be addressed immediately?
