You may engage/disengage any time. The W causes the tranny to start up in 3rd gear so you don't slip too much. I have never used it in my cars.

We got almost an inch of snow today in the Twin Cities, wow, bad year for snow lovers. Tomorrow it is supposed to go to -25. Don't try to bend plastic car parts :)
