This depends on how the car is driven. If a manual and automatic are driven on the highway they will be very close in efficiency since most automatics today have lock up torque converters. I hear this statement alot and there is lots of truth in it, but difficult to measure with so many variable with drivers and situations.

In support of your comment, on paper with calculator, manuals are about 98% efficient, and automatics about 85% until the torque converter locks up.
