86 740 or 90s 850 wagon 850

hey brickboard,

This site kicks ass and I just found it. Anyway I've got an '86 740 GLE wagon with 175k on it which needs a new alternator, spark plug wires and caps, a new muffler, a broken heater fan, lots of engine wire insulation rot but runs well aside from these issues. I'm having a used alternator put in by a friend who tipped me off about this site and can do much of the other work for really cheap. I'm not sure how much more money I want to put into this car though. I've found a number of 94-96 850s which seems affordable with between 100-120k on them. I'm wondering if I should keep the 740 running for a while longer or upgrade to an 850. I can do some repairs myself but certainly do not want to end up with something not reliable. Is an 850 a good route or should I be looking at something else? i.e. a differnt volvo model or possibly a subaru. I live in MI and the snow right now is horrendous.

Any help would be really appreciated,

Thanks

Ian
