Welcome to the board. We are here to help, if we can. Read all of the posts on 850 and S/V70 cars and learn from the other guys mistake. We are all learning more about Volvo every day. Don't worry about all of the problems posted here, most of these cars have 100K+ miles and some over 200K. We don't like to go to dealers because they charge so much for labor. The parts can be bought online at FCPGroton and IPDUSA, among others. Learn as much as you can.
1. Shift lock button alows bypassing the need to put your foot on the brake when you are working on your car. It is not intended for normal use. I use it when I don't want to walk all the way around the car and sit in the drivers seat just because I want to put it into neutral.
2. Volvo dealers have a program where you can trade in the radio for an up graded version w/CD player builtin for about $230. Ebay sellers charge a little less, but if the radio code is wrong you lose. You can also buy a 6 disk CD changer to be mounted in the trunk, I have one but only use it when I am on a road trip.
3. W/E/S, W is for slipper conditions and will start your car in third gear. E is for normal driving, especially interstate type. S is for fun, the shift points are raised to allow for more rpm and down shifts are faster - use this around town, it's more fun.
4. Your car is equiped with a computer which stores codes (DTC). These can easily be read by you if you read the section in 700/900 FAQs or go to the web site:
http://www.volvospeed.com/CheckEngine.htm
Car maintenance is not hard. Go to Sears and get a socket set (3/8) and a combination Torx tool (multiple bits). Learn how to change your own oil and brake pads. Then try harder stuff. Remember, if you try you will learn. If you go to a mechanic for everything, this car will cost you a lot of money.
The O2 sensor? Check your codes, set them to 1-1-1, and check them a week later. If the O2 code comes up again, then it is time to change it. Remember, if a code is stored, it means that a problem was detected at some time. It does not mean the problem went away. The computer cannot reset a code by itself.
if you go to volvospeed also check out their maintenance section. With pictures, it is a great site.
Have a lot of fun,
Klaus
