Actually, cars are getting better. Back in the old days when people only kept a car for 3 years, the complaint was that they started to fall apart as soon as the warranty ended. Now the warranty is 5 years. Better.
The dealer will NEVER replace a part because it MAY break in the future, if the car is under warranty. After the warranty period is over, they will try to replace the entire car, one part at a time, because it MAY eventually break. But then you pay, not VOLVO.
Engine and drivetrain are very good. It is the software that causes most of the problems. Like the dumb gas cap being loose... why not redesign the cap? If they made it work like a bottle stopper, with a lever on top, that would save a lot of finger nails and loose caps.
