Be very cautious trying to draw a spark from an ignition lead you can damage the coils insulation. If you get a spark at the plugs when out of the engine thats usually a sign that they are ok. If you had any major problem there would be no spark and you would have fault codes. Most likely explaination is your engine has flooded, these engines are prone to this and are really hard to get started again. Someone suggested turning the engine over with the fuel pump fuse removed untill it dries out, I havent tried that but it's worth a go.
