blown head gasket? 850 1997

This is my first turbo car so excuse the ignorance, but how will I know if the turbo fails? I don't have a boost gauge. Is it possible that I won't hear it spinning? Also I replaced the drain pipe gasket and cleaned up the oil on the engine. I just did that today though so I don't know if any oil is still leaking or not.
