Trans fluid cooler installing......good article 850

That's a good article on installing the aux tranny cooler. But as he alluded to toward the end of the article, he should have used the lower line for feeding the aux cooler since it was FROM the radiator's cooler going back TO the tranny. If you use the upper hose to feed the aux cooler you're sending it back through the radiator again, reheating it. Kinda defeats the purpose. A big problem for the 850 tranny is there's no filter. So you can do yourself a big favor installing a 3/8" Magnefine inline filter at the same time you do the cooler installation, put it in the return line as a coupler. The 850's tranny only holds 8 quarts, total. That 8 quarts is constantly being cycled through, unfiltered. There's no drain pan on the tranny, it has a small sump to collect fluid for the pump and thats it. So anything you can do to increase capacity, cool the fluid, clean the fluid, is going to dramatically increase the life of the tranny. I recommend synthetic fluid such as Mobil One ATF or a synthetic blend such as Quaker State Mercon V or Valvoline's blend. They stand up to high temps much better.
