I've had broken cat clog the exhaust on an '85 740, causing freeway stalls some years back so have had the cats removed completely from my current rwd bricks. I know that's not an option in CA.

One Ozbricks writer opines against racing cats or cat removal for the 850. Also some exhaust discussion threads linked there:
