transmission flush 850 1994

I would definitely flush the fluid, there's no internal filter. Use a synthetic or synthetic blend that meets Dexron IIe or better rating. All the new synthetics beat that rating. The tranny holds only 8 quarts, there's no "drain pan" to hold any more, there is simply a sump at the bottom with a drain bolt to remove. I highly recommend installing a Magnefine 3/8" inline filter at the same time, since there is no internal filter in the 850's transmission. At least in the Turbo models I would also highly recommend installing an aux tranny cooler to dissipate the high heat the tranny deals with. The Hayden Rapid Cool is a perfect cooler for the 850. If you do the flush yourself, the lower hose on the radiator is the return line to the tranny. Remove the battery and battery box to gain access to the return line fitting on the tranny. Unbolt the return line from the tranny, temporarily replace the battery and with the return line facing down into a catch pan run the motor to pump out the old fluid. Actually you start by draining the sump through the drain bolt, then refill with about 5 quarts of new fluid, then run the motor to flush the old fluid out of the torque converter. Let it run for a minute or so until the fluid stops flowing out then refasten the return line to the tranny and top off with new fluid and you're done. I installed an inline filter and aux cooler in the return line while I had it off. You don't need to remove the tranny lines from the radiator fittings.
