I had the same problem on my 1995 850, making the spring/summer/fall in Atlanta unbearable. Go to your local parts place, get a R134a recharge kit. Locate the low pressure port, connect it up and follow the instructions. Easy as pie and you'll have ice cold air afterwards.
My kit came with a pressure gauge. When connected to the low pressure port and A/C running, i could watch the pressure drop below a certain level and the compressor would switch off, then back on as the pressure rose above a different point.
