Sounds like it was pretty hot outside in KS on Sunday. Could have been a vapor lock resulting in a flooded engine (smelled gas). If you would have continued to 'floor' the accellerator, it might have come to life.
Things to check:
Clean air filter
Fuel pressure regulator
Clean/replace the spark plugs
