Be glad.... 850 1997

I have an AWD, and notice that the rear pads wear out faster than the front. Why would that be? It doesn't seem to be a function of the drive wheels, rather the fact that the front brakes do most of the work. If that is true, why do my rear pads go faster? (one possibility... they are significantly smaller than the front, so they could wear faster even if they do less work?)
