Unless your son loves to tinker (e.g., perform weekend repairs) with his car, an 850 would not be the best choice. To be honest, the best Volvo I ever had was an '88 240 sedan back when I was 19-21 years old. Maybe it was the thrill of just starting to drive, but it was a darn good car. Still regret selling it for the 850 I have now in some respects. Girls loved my '88 240 by the way!! The 240 in my opinion is a blast to drive and doesn't have enough power to get a young driver in trouble. The 850 (even non-turbo) will get you in trouble if you feel like "pushing the limits". Just my two cents. I would aim for a 240 If you can find a 91+ 240 in good reasonable shape. The 850 is a reliable car, but very costly and time-consuming to repair due to a cramped engine compartment and advanced electronic system (compared to the RWD Vovlos, that is).
