Yes it has happend to me, just that way. If you try your experiment again, keep the pressure gauge attached and watch what happens when the AC stops cycling. Bet it never gets back to 45lbs. And I also bet it cycles rapidly at idle before that.
Touch the high and low pressure lines right at the firewall, you will find one cold and the other "warm". Add a can of r134a and watch what happens, both lines will get cold.
Our cars are getting older and the AC hoses are aging too. Most likely the hoses are leaking slowly and will need a charge once in a while. A $10 can of r134a is a lot cheaper than an evaporator core supplied by a dealer or a total replacement of AC hoses.
